Let’s start our fun trivia session in the Far East. In Japan, you’re likely to come across sex dolls but, they won’t have that name. The Japanese call them Dutch Wives. This moniker has its roots in the 17th Century, when it is said that Dutch sailors had leather masturbation puppets that kept them warm on cold nights at sea.
This isn’t as farfetched as it sounds – the Dutch were key trading partners of the Japanese in the 1600s, with the Dutch East India Company setting up shop in Hirado, Nagasaki. The Dutch traded items such as spices and silk.
